Photocopy or trace the pattern for the needle (detector) onto the piece of paper and cut it out.

VERSORIUM NEEDLE PATTERN

Crease the paper slightly along the dotted lines. Insert the needle into the cork so that it forms a right angle with the top of the cork. Balance the paper pointer on top of the needle. Place the glass or jar over the pointer and cork as shown in the illustration above.

Vigorously rub the side of the glass with the piece of cloth. The pointer will be attracted to the side of the glass where the static electric charge is being generated. Wherever you move the cloth, the pointer will follow in the same direction.
